“What’s wrong with you?!”

child manic depression“What is wrong with you?!”

I’d get that a lot as a kid growing up.  When I was younger my parents would take me places and sometimes the littlest thing would set me off.  I would start balling and not be able to control myself and my parents would just look at each other like they didn’t know what to do.

Looking back I feel bad for the times I may have embarrassed them around their friends or made them feel at a loss to help appease my hyper emotions.  It can be very hard on your loved ones when emotional outbursts seem out of nowhere or not manageable.  And it can be really hard to know if it stems from a mental illness or if it’s just environmental.  My emotional outburst were related to my hypo-mania but no one knew that at the time.  People see children throw temper tantrums all the time but when is it chemical?  Some people judge parents and think they don’t know how to discipline their children when really you don’t know what’s causing the outburst.  Maybe it’s not based on how the child is being raised.  Maybe they have a mental illness that is causing the distress and unfortunately no one in the family knows about it yet so have no means to treat it.

For the majority of my life I have been called “too sensitive.”   I’ve also been called “too intense.”  Telling someone they are too sensitive or too intense is like telling them they have too many freckles.  I’ve learned being Bipolar II has its emotional baggage but at least I can say I am educated in the symptoms of bipolar disorder and how it affects my emotional state of mind so can forgive myself for the times that I made it hard on my parents and, hard on myself.
