The Benefits Of Supplements For ADHD

Introduction

There are various supplements that are beneficial for the treatment of ADHD.  This article will focus on these particular supplements.  They include: zinc, fish oil, and omega-3, American ginseng and Ginkgo leaf, and melatonin.

Zinc

According to webmd, the first type of supplement used to treat ADHD is zinc.  According to this source, it has been cited that children with ADHD have lower levels of zinc in their bodies.  In addition, therefore, if you take zinc supplements, children may have decreases in hyperactivity and impulsitivity.  According to webmd, the same research shows no correlation between zinc and inattentiveness. According to webmd, “Foods high in zinc include oysters and other seafood, red meat, poultry, dairy products, beans, nuts, whole grains, and fortified cereals.”

Fish Oil

In addition to zinc, according to webmd, another type of supplement used to treat ADHD is fish oil.  To be specific, fish oil can help improve ADHD symptoms.  According to webmd, fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids and may “help improve the mental skills of children with the disorder who are 8 to 12 years old.” To be specific, it can help “improve a child’s ability to organize activities.”  According to webmd, fish oil has been shown to show improvement in hyperactivity, inattentiveness, and thinking clearly for children with ADHD between 7 to 12 years old.  According to webmd, foods that contain fish oil include salmon, albacore tuna, herring, mackerel, trout, and sardines.

Other Supplements

According to webmd, natural supplements might also help ADHD symptoms.  American ginseng and Ginkgo leaf may help ADHD symptoms in children ages 3 to 17 in one study.  Melatonin might also help children with sleep.

To end this article, various supplements and natural supplements have been mentioned for the use of ADHD treatment.  According to webmd, they include zinc, fish oil, and omega-3, American ginseng and Ginkgo leaf, and melatonin.  According to webmd, zinc can be used to decrease hyperactivity and impulsitivity.  According to webmd, fish oil can be used to improve organization, specifically a child’s ability to organize tasks.  According to webmd, American ginseng and Ginkgo leaf may help ADHD symptoms in children ages 3 to 17 in one study.  Melatonin might also help children with sleep.  In addition to taking supplements and natural supplements in addition to your ADHD medication, also seek therapy as well.  The combination of the three will aid in your recovery.  Do not self-diagnose yourself or stop taking your medication just for the supplements.
