What Are The Similarities Between ADHD and Autism?

Introduction

According to understood.org, “Autism spectrum disorder and ADHD are related in several ways. They have some of the same symptoms. Experts recently changed the way they think about how autism and ADHD are related. Not so long ago, the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) stated that a person couldn’t have autism and ADHD. But the newest version (called DSM-5) allows for a person to be diagnosed with both.” With that said, you may be wondering what are the similarities between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder. This article will describe the similarities between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Trouble Paying Attention

One of the main symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is difficulty paying attention during a task. It is important to note that difficulty paying attention during a task may also occur in Autism Spectrum Disorder. According to understood.org, “Trouble paying attention: Kids with autism may struggle with this for several reasons. One is that language difficulties can make it seem like a child isn’t paying attention to directions.” With that said, difficulty paying attention during tasks may occur in both Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and also Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Trouble With Social Interactions

Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder are known to have difficulty with maintaining eye contact and social interactions in general. However, it is also important to note that trouble with social interactions may also occur in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. According to understood.org, “Trouble with social interactions: ADHD can affect social skills. This might include avoiding eye contact and getting into other people’s personal space.” With that said, having trouble with social interactions can occur in both Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder as well as Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Conclusion

According to understood.org, “Sometimes these overlapping symptoms can cause a child to be incorrectly diagnosed with one condition rather than the other. If you’re ever concerned about a possible misdiagnosis, talk to your child’s doctor. Doctors are very used to having these kinds of conversations and can even help you get a second opinion.” On an even further note, if you are concerned about your child’s mental health consider talking to your child’s doctor. Your doctor can help decipher between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder and offer valid input. Be wise. It is important to not be afraid to talk to your doctor.
