Get your dance on
If one of your wellness goals is to lose weight, you wouldn’t be alone. But let’s be honest, hitting the gym on a regular basis can become boring and mundane.
Moreover, you can do hundreds of crunches a day and still not lose much weight around your mid-section. Most abdominal exercises strengthen the underlying muscles of your core but do very little to get rid of the subcutaneous fat on top.
To get rid of belly fat, you have to burn more calories than you consume. That means you must eat healthy meals, do aerobic exercises and stay consistent. Dancing for physical fitness is a fun way to twist and shake your way to a slimmer body. It’s also a great way to rev up your mood.
Here’s four quick dance styles that help you burn calories, slim down and get your fun on.
Kicking It with Jumpstyle
Jumpstyle is a high-energy techno dance style that was first popularized in raves and street parties across Europe. Techno music typically ranges between 120 and 140 beats per minute making it one of the fastest forms of dance music. Even the most basic jumpstyle dance steps, such as old school hardstyle, keep you jumping on every beat count.
You kick your legs forward and backward, even scissoring them in mid-air between beats. By combining moves like the sidejump, wheel and half twist, you can twist and turn your way to a slimmer waistline.
Twerking is Legit
Twerking is a dance move in which you bend at the waist and pop your bottom back and forth to pulse-pounding hip-hop tracks. This isn’t just booty-shaking. You lower your center of gravity, pump your pelvis and flex at the abdomen for a sustained period of time. A five-minute twerking session for beginners can burn up to 40 calories.
You don’t have to be an exhibitionist, either — join a twerking fitness class with your friends or incorporate it into your home fitness routine.
Samba is the national dance style of Brazil. Both men and women practice the samba for physical fitness because it features swaying hip movements, arm flourishes and tight turns. You can dance samba with a partner or by yourself. Samba axe is a super-fast version of samba that features a quick turning dance step on every quarter beat.
The arms are held out to the sides and wave in an undulating fashion. It raises your heart rate and compels you to move your arms, waist, hips and legs all at the same time.
Quickstepping with Ballroom Dance
The quickstep is the fastest ballroom dance style. It features moves that burn lots of calories, making the quickstep ideal for shedding belly fat. Part charleston and part waltz, the quickstep is meant for uptempo partner dancing.
It is a high energy dance form that takes both coordination and practice. Your posture is streamlined and elongated, with your abdomen twisting repeatedly as you hop and turn across the dance floor.
Dance moves like the fishtail and the “hover-corte” involve several spins of the entire body and rapid step patterns with the feet.
If you are trying to drop a few pounds, increase your mood and have fun all at the same time, dancing can be a meaningful actvity.
