This is brilliant information and it fits me to a T. Now I understand why I’ve ended up in relationships with narcissists. For the life of me I couldn’t figure out what was wrong with me and why I seemed to attract them but now I know. This means so much to me. Thank you very much for posting such a great article.

I see ALL 7 traits in myself. I look back over my life and I see involvement with one narcissist after another. My faith encourages love, forgiveness, etc. My comment today, however, concerns my adult son who has informed me he has been diagnosed as a narcissist. (Surprise, surprise.)

I have always held the “I’ll be there for you, my children, no matter what” maternal position. That’s the JOB. I’ve never enabled or excused, but I let them know I’ll always have their backs, be a friend, love them unconditionally. I really believed our relationship was getting better until, having come away from a month’s uncomfortable Silent Treatment this week, he told me he hadn’t called because I’d said something he didn’t like in our last conversation. He was punishing me for a trifle.

I will always be his mother. I gave birth to him. But I am SO not going to get sucked into another of his irrational, manipulative games. I have decided to go No Contact for an indefinite period of time. I haven’t planned to inform him I’m going No Contact, I plan to just cut off all communication. It hit me, though, that I’m “giving HIM the silent treatment”. I’m not trying to manipulate him or punish him. (Sadly, I’ve realized he doesn’t love me at all. He isn’t capable of actual love, and he won’t care other than seeing his perceived power over me slipping through his fingers.) I’m protecting myself. I want nothing to do with him.

I’ve never seen an article to help parents of an adult narcissist “parent” the behavior disordered person who is doing evil. I’d appreciate it if someone can point me to good resources. Thanks!
