My spouse, who is certainly a narcissist which I’ve figured out over the years, has an interesting habit that makes me wonder if this is a form of stealth control (doesn’t want to sound needy or to make his needs known so he uses work-arounds to get his way). He refuses to ask me to do things he wants from me, so when he wants me to do something for him, he’ll make comments indicating he wants something done, but short of asking me directly. He’ll angle around and sound discouraged or upset (guilt trip!) until I offer to do who he wants. Then he’ll accept my offer but sound reluctant like he really didn’t mean to inconvenience me–while still getting exactly what he wanted in the first place! I’ve learned to see the insincerity in his behavior and realize this is a form of manipulation. I have even asked him directly if whatever it is is what he wants me to do for him, but he’d rather try to make me feel guilty or sorry for him and have me offer like it’s my idea.
