    I had a toxic one-sided friendship. This person always vented all their drama and problems to me, and only contacted me when something was wrong. She was never really a friend or there for me when I needed someone to talk to. Whether sharing good/positive news, (could not be happy for others) accomplishments, or to discuss a problem. After years of this, I had enough and blocked her emails, phone numbers, and text messages. I must say, life is so much lighter and less stressful; and not having the burden of keeping the “friendship” going is a great relief.

    Thanks Sharon. A great read. I had to remove certain members of my family from my life. I’d just outgrown all the drama. I had had a very close relationship with both of these siblings but they were never accountable for their behaviour and I always felt I was obligated to “keep the peace” because it was family. It was hard to end the friendships and other family members tried desperately for me to “forgive and forget”. However, not once did the siblings apologise for the hurt and chaos they caused; it was always done through a third party such as mum or dad. There was always that sub-text that I should do what’s right for the family, to keep the illusion going. Lots of shame and guilt used as manipulation. Life is much more peaceful these days and the pressure of not trying to pretend that these people are my friends is a weight off my shoulders.
