Between current research (http://www.lifehacker.co.in/life/Positive-Self-Affirmation-May-Backfire-on-People-with-Low-Self-Esteem/articleshow/36898279.cms) and personal experience, a ‘”meditation” as provided can be harmful to certain people.

For someone like me, repeating statements about ourselves that we doubt fuels depression and shame. Our brains start to wonder why we aren’t lovable, why we aren’t enough…

It’s a bit like trying to use physiology by putting on a full smile or to laugh. Despite what some new age/ self help types say, it feels fake/ your brain identifies this and doesn’t provide the hormones and neurotransmitters that a natural smile does, or even what a half smile provides in the same situation.

The reason I feel compelled to mention it is that for me, and so, reasonably for others, things like that can lead to suicidal ideation and self harm behaviour.

I wonder if it’s better to have people come up with validating and supportive thoughts that they can believe.

Thanks Sharon. Articles on co-dependency and shame are so helpful. Never an easy process to unlearn things from childhood and thoughts that have been internalized for decades but lots of self care and education is a start.
