I can find humor in just about anything, but in this case, I was angry a split second after smiling and the anger lingered long after the smile.Unfortunately this situation can occur (I wanted to say often occurs, but edited) when the police encounter someone with a mental disorder. We’ve all seen the news stories, two of the most recent being the Fullerton, California beating death, which included repeated tasering, of Kelly Thomas, a homeless man diagnosed with schizophrenia and the Henrico, Virginia non-fatal shooting of Roger Allen Skeens, an unarmed man said to suffer from bipolar disorder. It both cases it appears the officers involved had previous contact with the victims. In the video of the Fullerton incident police are heard saying “It seems like every day we have to talk to you about something” and witnesses of the Henrico incident reported that the police had previously been to the apartments because of Skeens’ behavior.I guess familiarity indeed breeds contempt instead of understanding. While being beaten Thomas is heard repeatedly yelling for his father. A witness photo taken just before the shooting shows Skeens with his arms outstretched, obviously unarmed. Witnesses say it was like he was daring the police to shoot him. I guess they were more than glad to comply because they shot him in the torso (the torso?!)Police training appears to need some serious updating. But, I’m preaching to the choir, aren’t I?
