Why Would Your True Love Send You Two Turtle Doves?
What fact do we really know about Turtle Doves? What is a Turtledove anyway?
First, I think we all know Turtle Doves is a Dove! But a dove is from the “the animal family Columbidae” that is basically a pigeon*. Yes, our international symbol of love and peace is also related to our international symbol of filth, the pigeon or “flying rats.”
My Flying Rat Relationship
The flying rat or pigeon (along with other birds) are also responsible for millions of dollars of damage “every year on buildings, rooves, machinery, vehicles, ventilation systems and a lot more.” Cleaning up after pigeon droppings and nesting materials that accumulate is essential or it can end up causing serious damage and serious health issues. SEE: Damages Caused by Pigeons & How To Prevent Them*
Some years back I worked with a company to offer bird control to limit damage and clean up their mess. Even drew a Window Cleaning Cartoon about the profitability of pigeons. The profit came at too high of a price, I gave cleaning up Terds off building and ledges after getting really sick cleaning on a very nasty job.
Something that struck me so funny is one suggestion for controlling the pigeon…in article Damages Caused by Pigeons & How To Prevent Them.
They suggest Pigeon Birth Control! Pigeon contraceptive! LOL
The French Flying Rats Look Down On Me
There are over 300 species of Pigeon and Dove. They are one of the most common bird worldwide. Though, I know first hand that the French Pigeon is the snootiest!
Once visiting the charming hilltop Montmartre district I tried to feed some French pigeons with some of my lunch (Ham and Cheese Baguette). The bird would not go near me – they must have known I was an American.
They showed me how snotty they were that day because only a few minutes later a local walked next to me and tossed out some bread…they flocked to him and ignored me.
Oh ya, some of those little buggers were perched on him. I took this pic after he dumped his bread next to me then walked away with a bird on his head. LOL
Why are they called Turtle Doves?
Enough about pigeons! Back to the Turtle Dove!
Why are they called Turtle Doves? Do they have “turtle” DNA?
No, there is no connection to any Reptilia Testudines – “Turtles.”
Rather the Turtle Doves might have more in common with a cat, why? Well, their song is more like purring. They make a low continuous vibratory sound usually expressing contentment…a purring ‘turrr turrr turr’ song (hence their Latin name).
Would you keep them? Or set them free? Or Boil them in chicken broth with celery, onions, garlic, mushrooms, salt and pepper?
