Where Are They Now: Mental Health Hero: Crystal D. Choate

In this, “Where Are They Now?” We get a chance to catch up with 2012 hero of the Mental Health Heroes

Crystal D. ChoateIndependent Mental Health Peer Advocate.

I love this quote by Crystal, she says,

I make myself laugh even when I don’t feel like it. It’s like an adrenaline rush. I focus on humour to lighten my life.” ~  Crystal D. Choate (2012)

Even though some years have passed since we communicated, I know she still gets an adrenaline rush from laughter and humor.  Crystal grew up just 10 miles from Disney Land in California and has extensively travelled all over.  She told me how she would hitchhike all over. Or take the bus to many places like San Diego and Big Bear Lake in Southern California.

When we first heard of Crystal, she was living in Alaska. While today I associate Alaska with all the T.V. shows set in Alaska such as Gold Rush: Alaska (*premiered 2010), Alaskan Bush People (*premiered 2014), or Deadliest Catch (*premiered 2005)…I can’t help to think about Crystal every now and again when I’m watching those shows.

How does she feel about Alaska? Crystal: “Yeah.. got a great place to live… super duper yeah.. a great big Dog, and much more.

More indeed, now let’s catch up with Crystal in this installment of “Where Are They Now.

It has been years since I even opened my email account, but things change all the time.
6 years, I have done so much, lost so much, and still want to do many more things, go many places.
I reread what I wrote back then… I still feel the same.
Some of My Hero’s have passed and I have gained new ones. One in-particular is Deremiah *CPE and Inspirational speaker. I have his book- Power Smile. (in the photo you used for my caricature)  He just introduced me, in a Facebook way, to Les Brown, who also Inspires me, makes me laugh and cry and Rejoice in Life.
I am Still a Mental Health Warrior!
I am still a Successful writer too, with the help of Brittany Gunderson, I have poems published in her book “Poetically Broken“.
She has another one coming out soon with more of my works. So I am bragging a wee bit here. lol
Wellness and Happiness are Still my main Goals, I use my WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) all the time. I used to think my Wellness toolbox had a lot of things in it.. Then I thought, my house is my toolbox,,, I’m living in my toolbox.!!!  As my life moved on, It dawned on me,,, the whole world and even the Universe Is My toolbox, everything can be utilized toward my happiness. It is never easy to make changes, but so worth the effort.
I lost my flooding Noah’s Ark of a House, abandoned ship, and lived in my Blazer for two summers traveling down roads I whizzed by over the last 41 years here in Alaska. Found entertainment everywhere I went. Now I am in a wonderful place (it has been just over a year here), near a lake, with a fire pit (We have Bon-Fires) and woods all around. When I walk my dog Yo’Gee, we have to watch for the moose hanging around. We get our exercise, enjoy the fresh air and see some cool things, like the Swans when they stopped by the pond down the road.  Yo’Gee has to pull me home at times, I get worn out, up and down the hills on this road, but Thank God he is 100 pounds of assistance for me, What Big ears you have, he hears things, like ptarmigan(the stupid chickens running around) the porcupine, who had to find a new home when they moved the greenhouse. What Big eyes you have to see with, and His senses are Great, Although he runs and hides when I cry. Goofy Dog.
