Where Are They Now? Mental Health Hero: John McManamy

I’m so thrilled to share with you the update about our Mental Health Hero John McManamy. John is an award-winning mental health journalist and author with a great sense of humor!

John is really, really, down to earth, no really–he gets down into the earth and dirt and beauty of nature.  You must check and watch some of his “Life from the shack” videos.

John tells it how it is, and gives you the facts.  We love his commitment to advocacy and helping our fellow peers.

It gives me great pleasure to give you his update.

Wishing you the best John.

Where Are They Now: Mental Health Hero

John McManamy (MHHero 2012)

Mental Health Hero by Chato Stewart

The following is a message from John Mcmanmy:

In July 2016, I underwent quadruple bypass surgery. My heart was totally blocked – I shouldn’t be alive. At the same time, I suffered financial collapse and loss of a dear friend. Soon after I recovered and organized my life, in late Jan 2017, I packed my stuff into my old car and hit the open road. I left from San Diego and headed east, sleeping out in nature in my tent and on people’s couches. Ten months, 13,000 miles, and 30 states later, I was back in San Diego, having accomplished a complete circuit of the country. Two weeks later, I was back on the road.

This year, sitting under a tree in a wash in a desert in AZ, I began writing a book of my 2017 journey. I completed my first draft and am looking forward to finding a publisher.
Take home message for my bipolar audience: It is best to think of bipolar as a cycling illness – one where we are out of sync with the cycles of nature, internal and external. The best treatment is to get out in nature – our DNA is built to be in the fresh air. There, in our real home, we can resync and restore.

Why is the Caricature drawn with a raccoon and skunk you may ask… It seems a bit odd right?

At the time John has just published a new book titled:

Raccoons Respect My Piss But Watch Out For Skunks: My Funny Life on a Planet Not of My Choosing That I Now – Maybe, Sort of, Not Really, Well Okay – Call HomePaperback – April 18, 2012
