The other thing is that if you rely solely on medication to manage depression or anxiety, for example, you have done nothing to train the mind, so that when you come off the medication, you are just as vulnerable to a relapse as though you had never taken the medication. ~ DANIEL GOLEMAN, author

See No Evil: Medication Life Lesson

See me taking my meds day in and day out, some days I would feel like I’m in a lab experiment.  After taking meditations for many years, this has taught me a few life lessons.  Let me share them with the help of my Mental Health Humor Cartoons featuring The Family Stew and Over-Medicated series.

My Medication Life Lesson:

The Family Stew

My Medication Life Lesson No. 1:  Not all medication works the same, obviously.  It can take some time to find the right combo… During this time, it could feel like we are always tweaking and adding meds.  But fear not, in time, many of us find the right Medication Combo for us.  It required me sticking to the medication program before I got the right mix.  So my lesson is: not giving up too early on meds and write them all off cause of mild, non-life threatening, somewhat normal side-effects.

My Medication Life Lesson No. 2:  Know what side-effects to expect from the medication.  Know you can ask for a different medication if you believe that medication is wrong for you.  For instance, some meds trigger an uncontrollable appetite with me, I would eat everything edible in the house and still feel hungry.  So, I try to avoid medications that cause weight gain.  For example, some selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) namely ProzacZoloft, and Paxil are known for high weight gain.

Shilpi Agarwal, MD, a board-certified family physician in Washington, DC, suggests: “to make sure you get an accurate starting weight before you even fill the prescription, and once you start taking it, check your weight again in 2 weeks,” she says. “A lot of people gain weight without even realizing it, and if you don’t catch it until you’re 6 weeks in, that could mean you’re up 10 or more pounds.

My Medication Life Lesson No. 3:  More about side-effects: you have them then many of them will subside in time. Talk to your doctor if you have any, especially suicidal thoughts or have extreme things happen. (i.e. an allergic reaction or a rash of any type.)  Here are some cartoons that depict some of my side-effects.  Note: do not stop taking your meditation until you talk to your doctor or other professional.

Depression Test Cartoons by Chato B. Stewart

Without the meds, I get the feeling the symptoms start overtaking me. I can quickly start spiraling down quickly into a dark depression.

And just when I thought, I would be out of all my pills I got my coverage back. I got the prescriptions filled; crisis averted.
