The fact is every Relationship is Complex! Well, maybe not that of man’s best friend…the dog! Feed him, walk him, pet him and he is good. Dogs love you heartly…Well, most dogs, if they’re your pet. Cats take work. People are much harder. Fish are the easiest.
Each relationship we have is different; family dynamics play a role. If we had a great home environment, full of positive reinforcement and loving, nurturing, healthy growing experience…a lot of that will set a strong foundation for adult life. Unfortunately, that was not my experience growing up, but I want it to be my children’s. With my kids–all tween to teen 10, 12,14, and 16…I know, for a fact, they have had a life full of love and positive reinforcement! I worry, sometimes, about them seeing first hand my “Bipolar Dad” come out from time to time. Joan Winifred and I have always been open and honest with them and about my diagnosis. I believe that has helped them understand Dad better and has helped them understand themselves better too.
My kids are my world. It is so hard for me to see them grow up. However, as they grow and become more independent, it makes me happy to see their progress. No! we are not the brady bunch…lol I bet the “brady bunch” reference might go over some heads.
My parenting style and my wife’s parenting style has changed over the last 16 years… One thing has not…lead, listen, and love. I know I am more of the “rock of authority” and “stricter” in many ways. I am that way, due to the fact that, I did not get the right type of restrictions/safety boundaries that can serve as a protection or keep you out of trouble or danger when growing up…
This was very intriguing to me taking the Psych Central Parenting Style Quiz
What’s your parenting style? Are you more democratic or authoritative? Is your style more strict or lenient?
