Depression Medications

  • citalopram (Celexa)
  • fluoxetine (Prozac)
  • fluvoxamine (Luvox)
  • mirtazapine (Remeron)
  • paroxetine (Paxil)
  • sertraline (Zoloft)

Mood Stabilizers

  • Clozapine (Clozaril)
  • Lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid)
  • Olanzapine (Zyprexa)
  • Quetiapine (Seroquel)
  • Risperidone (Risperdal)

List from WebMD. But it is a short list.  I just found it funny the first two categories, on their list, were depression drugs and mood stabilizers.

The fact is many drugs will have weight gain as a side effect. But we also must note that if we are dealing with depression or other disorders our diet may change dramatically.  While WeMD noted that some meds have been the cause of a 25lb gain per year….other factors still have to be, dare I say, “weighed”…lol

Coming from a once 405lbs guy…Still fighting his battle down to 360lbs, I can tell you, it’s not easy.  Do the meds slow the process of weight-loss? sure!  Do they add to the weight gain? They did, for me, until I knew what meds to try to avoid and reduce.  Still, I have to balance that with a lot of other factors.  Below are some Mental Health Cartoons I’ve drawn about this subject.
