Drawing done by Chato Stewart

Crystal D Choate grew up in Brea, CA, 10 miles from Disney Land (I LOVE Disneyland). She was always hitchhiking all over, or taking the bus, skipping school and getting bus transfers to places like San Diego and Big Bear.

In her words, she was,”wild…I tell ya! Wild!”

Crystal goes on to say, “I make myself laugh even when I don’t feel like it. It’s like an adrenaline rush. I focus on humour to lighten my life.

If you were marooned on an island, name three things you would take with you:

Dang…it’s always only 3 things! One ton of chocolate. Two tons of tea. And then an ax. I’m hoping I will have my glasses so I can start a fire, and I hope there is water, i hate fishy things to eat, but i would eat stuff out of the sea or rivers if I had to survive…yuckkitty..

What motivates you?

Lots of things motivate me. Light, hot, bright sunshine. My parents, children and friends. If I can help just one person, I have done a great job of being a good example. People laughing motivates me. Eating right so I don’t have pain motivates me!Crystal Choate - 2012 Mental Health Hero by Chato Stewart and Mental Health Humor Project 455

How do you find the balance?

Balance is like a roller-coaster ride: you can hang on tight and scream your lungs out, and then run to get back in line to do it again. Ummmm what balance? I’m always falling down! I have to slow down, work hard at thinking, and sometimes just STOP. I have lots of stop signs around me. I have to learn to stop stop stop.

You have one wish: what would it be?

One Wish…again, only ONE!?  The Genie said, “Your wish is my command,” not how many.! Okay, I’m thinking hard on this cause if it comes true, I can help others learn WRAP. So….unlimited gas for a new car to share WRAP with others here on the Kenai Peninsula with my friend Gina Savchuk Jones. AK49!!!!!!

What is your current state of mind?

You just boosted my current state of mind to Mind Blowing Off the Charts, Chato!

Crystal D Choate had her story published in Mary Ellen Copeland’s book, “The WRAP Story,” page 154, under the WRAP Facilitators chapter, so I had to become a facilitator and have FUN…Friends Utilizing Networking.! (The WRAP Story, an anthology, has 82 stories written by people who recovered from mental illnesses: depression, anxiety, ADD, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia.)
