Mental Health Super Heroes

I’m back… from the DBSA Conference! I was unable to log in due to restriction the Hotel had on their WiFi service; I couldn’t even check my e-mail or log into Facebook! On top of that, I had my return flight canceled…so, I arrived home much later than anticipated. I have a lot of video and photos yet to organize. Once I do, I’ll share it with everyone.

Until then, I would like to share this video Poem by my new friend, Laura Burke. Here is her bio:

Laura Burke suffered from depression for most of her life, until she found the theatre. Laura was diagnosed with schizophrenia disorder in 2005, which robbed her of the ability to feel any emotion except anxiety and fear, and her acting career was halted in its tracks. After spending a year debating whether or not she would be able to continue with theatre, she finally began to create again. She saw a drama therapist, painted, began writing poetry and joined a theatre troupe. Finally, years later, after surrounding herself with a supportive network and following a creative path once again, her brain and her heart have begun to heal.

In 2007, Laura joined the Peer Support Staff at Laing House, where she ran drama and writing groups. In 2009, she was a Peer Support Facilitator at the Schizophrenia Society of Nova Scotia. She has volunteered at the NS Early Psychosis Program, and actively speaks about mental health advocacy and recovery. She has performed her spoken word poetry widely, including competitively at the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word in 2009. In 2010, Laura started her MA in Drama Therapy at Concordia University in Montreal.

Most recently, Laura shared her spoken word poetry and her journey through mental illness in “Superman: A Visual Poem,” a video produced in association with the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia. Click here to view this touching and inspirational video:

Patrick Bruckart just missed lasted year’s Cartoon-A-Thon because we ran out of room… He has waited since December 13th, 2009<span style=”font-family: Tahoma; font-size: x-small;”> to be part of the cartoon-a-thon. He is my Mental Health Hero for putting up with me for so long!

Patrick is a mental health consumer and advocate, and a sometimes political activist from Richmond, Virginia. He is also very active on twitter user and welcomes followers @Method2Mania.

I am a strong believer in peers helping peers, consumer empowerment, and advocacy, but I have learned to keep my commitments in these areas manageable. In my case, this means doing less than most people do and scheduling downtime for myself. By taking things slowly, I hope to better manage my social anxiety and avoid the long periods of isolation that have punctuated my life over the last fifteen or so years.
