Fishing for Truth… Godfather Style

What if “Fishing for Truth” could be done Godfather Style? The Godfather is a movie that will live in infamy when it comes to mob movies – probably one of the most recognized movies in the world!  No other movie (to my knowledge) has spawned so many snippets and movie quotes that has encompassed the psychological subculture like the Godfather.  Many pop-culture movies have referred to the Godfather in their own dialogue… Some I hear the most are are:

Vito Corleone: “I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse.”
Clemenza: “Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.”
Michael Corleone: “It’s not personal, Sonny. It’s strictly business.”
Sonny: “it’s all out war we go to the mattresses.”

One of my favorite expressions from the movie (which really isn’t in the movie at all) is… “swimming with the fishes.”  I still hear it all the time…  Here’s how the expression came about from the movie.

[Tessio brings in Luca Brasi’s bulletproof vest, delivered with a fish inside]
Sonny: What the hell is this?
Clemenza: It’s a Sicilian message. It means Luca Brasi sleeps with the fishes.

Both terms can be used basically meaning the same thing… Although Godfather aficionados would argue the semantics of the expressions… I think it’s safe to say that if you send an article of clothing or a bulletproof vest with FISH inside to someone you don’t like, they will quickly get what you’re trying to say.

In summary, it is safe to say, that if you’re looking to get the truth Godfather style, you’ll need to make him an offer he can’t refuse. Or it’ll be time to go to the mattresses… You remind them that it’s not personal, just business… That if you can’t come to a mutual understanding with your consigliary mediating… And someone’s gonna  be sleeping with the fishes.

You’ll find you can get to the truth quicker using these Godfather references…  Oh ya, you may also find yourself in jail if you don’t remember to Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.
