The Mentality of Mass Murder

“Trained to live off nature’s land, Trained in combat hand to hand, Men who fight by night and day, Courage take from the Green Beret” Staff Sergeant Barry Saddler

“The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.” God

serial killers photoI am taking a hiatus from my rigorous routine of writing but for two reasons and more I feel compelled to bring forth these words. The first is the death of twelve people in California by gunshots. The second is my momentary fascination with the story of Aileen Wuornos. Aileen being the first woman serial killer.

I do not know much about the shooter in  California. I do know that he was a marine who served in Afghanistan. That is enough to tell me that his mind could not be anything but troubled. The training in the military is one that dehumanizes both self and others. It is not natural for man to kill and so they need to be conditioned by basic training. The enemy has to be made less than human to pull this off properly.

I, of course, have never been in the marine corps or any branch of the military for that matter. But I have two very close friends who served in the marines. My one friend told me that his mind was in a state that he wanted to kill for his country. The other one realized in horror exactly what was being done to him and his comrades. He witnessed his fellow screaming as they bayonetted dummies and he understood fully what was happening, he was being transformed into an efficient killer.

Aileen Wuornos killed seven men. Her past was very troubled. She never met her father, who was in prison for child molestation. He killed himself in jail. Aileen and her brother were abandoned by their mother at a young age.  Adopted by her grandparents the troubles continued. At age eleven she became sexually active engaging in prostitution. At age fourteen she was pregnant and gave birth. The child was given up for adoption. It is speculated that her brother or grandfather might have been the father. She was then kicked out of her house. She lived in the woods for two years. Then she hitchhiked to Florida and became a prostitute.  So she too had a reality that was very warped.

While the details of why Aileen became a serial killer are murky I believe that her first kill was a customer who wanted to sexually abuse her and that she killed in self-defense Once the man was dead she made the best of a bad thing and stole all he had. I believe that this killing pushed her over the edge and she began to hunt down other men.

The common factor is disturbed psychology. The veteran in  California had many run-ins with the law. The idea I want to propose to you is how many mass murderers or serial killers have been averted by simple kindness.

I believe in life on is either a healer or one who inflicts pain. There is no middle ground. Unless you are actively out there trying to make a difference in the world or you are part of the problem. So many people pontificate their hateful positions from the anonymous forum of Facebook. Many are satisfied and content with their position in life. Nothing other than total solidarity with the disenfranchised will do.

There is that lot who gives lips service to good things and donate their money. While this is nice it is far from adequate. When lives interlink a real bond of compassion and friendship is made. We are after all, all human beings. Race, religion, economics all should make no difference. Of course this contrary to the reality of the world. Hatred and racism reign supreme. If you doubt it take a ride through northern New Jersey and you will see how the poor and disenfranchised are holed up in their urban ghettos.

Genuine love, that is the key to releasing the hatred in the unstable that has the potential to kill. Genuine love of course unconditional and all inclusive.
