“Their weapons of mass destruction, Were inspected and destroyed, The battleships were dismantled, Never again to be deployed, And the world breathed a sigh of relief, After the revolution” David Rovics
Who is David Rovics and why should he matter to you?
I live in Northern New Jersey and there are a wide variety of communities. Some are more affluent than others. The shameful thing is that sometimes when families will move from a poorer community they will sometimes disown their past. As if there was some shame in being poor. David Rovics is the antithesis of this concept.
America is a land of oppression. You might not be aware of the reality, and it is key to explaining the phenomena of David Rovics. Also, there is a tradition of folk singers who have stood up for the common man. I’ll throw out some names like Joe Hill, Woodie Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan and Phil Ochs. But we can toss Dylan off that list as he deserted the cause and perhaps replace him with Joan Baez or Buffy Sainte Marie. I’ll put David Rovics on that list as well.
David Rovics is an extremely powerful singer and dangerous to those who are in power. You see the United States is ruled by a greedy oligarchy who give us an illusion of freedom and liberties. Look at the election system, we got two parties with no significant differences. Under both Democrats and Republicans we have endless war, no universal health care, and both cater to Wall Street and AIPAC.
Part of the oppression of the poor is keeping them ignorant of the rich past that they have. There is in the United States historical events where the poor people faced severe suffering and inhuman barbaric torment. Time after time the poor people organized and revolted against their oppressors. David Rovics has a great knowledge of these events and articulates them beautifully in his song lyrics. If you have never heard of armed revolts in the United States government there is a very good reason why. The people in charge don’t want to give the poor any ideas or inspiration.
David Rovics is one of the many who has a heart for the poor and understands that no matter what race, religion, or other factors that we all share a common humanity. But you won’t hear David Rovics on commercial radio. As you do know that giant corporations control our media. David Rovics is a revolutionary and that makes him extremely dangerous. He is also very talented able to twist a phrase in a way reminiscent of Bob Dylan.
In today’s modern environment it is very hard for an artist of any kind to make a living. There are of course these superstar musical artists with massive record company machines behind them. In the literary field, you have the few best selling authors. But many others fall through the gaping holes created by modern technology. With the simplicity of downloading songs for free on the internet, the revenue to artists has plummeted to almost nothing. This makes it extremely difficult to be a professional musician. Of course, David could probably sell out and sing songs that would be acceptable to be played on the radio, as he certainly has the talent to do so. But at this point, I find this possibility highly unlikely. David in his outspoken, left-wing political views he has crossed a line of no return. The system will not endorse anything that suggests that the system is fundamentally immoral and needs to be done away with.
I have been chatting with David via email and this little endorsement will come as a surprise to him. David Rovics is the musical champion of the downtrodden and outcast whose past has been robbed from them. I urge you to listen to his songs and learn. Together we can walk hand in hand to a better day one song at a time. http://www.davidrovics.com/history/august/
