The Absurdity Of Medicine

“The pills, the pills the magical pills the cure your ills and give you no thrills” FeatherLeaf

So I was communicating with a devoted follower of my blog, perhaps he is the only one but I do have one.  I asked him what to write about and he said medicine. I thought that a most appropriate topic.

Pills photoFor people with mental illness, medicine is life and death. I am not exaggerating. I had a good friend who killed himself while he was off his medicine. I believe if he was in a stable frame of mind he would never have done so. This is a very serious topic.

I recall going in and out of hospitals. This was very frustrating because I was faithfully taking my medicines. The psychiatrists just couldn’t find one the worked effectively on me. With choices running down I was put on Clozaril. This worked wonders and I was able to return to college and graduate. Once I got my diploma in hand, with a psychiatrist’s supervision I tried to switch medicines. Clozaril has a risk associated with it, which is that the white blood cell count can go to zero, sometimes resulting in death. As a result to take Clozaril one must take blood tests on a regular basis. When I first began taking the medicine it was once a week. Now it is once a month.

But my tale of switching medicines is not a happy one. When I switched to the new medicine didn’t work. I nearly had to go back to the hospital. I heard later that the numbers by the pharmaceutical company had been fixed, to make this medicine seem more effective than it was.

Unfortunately, in the United States, the power of the pharmaceutical companies are too great. And even more unfortunate is that they are more concerned with making money than with curing their patients’ diseases. For example, there is a lot of money in cancer and giving chemotherapy. There are many alternative cures for cancer, but unfortunately, by the power of big medicine, they are outlawed and illegal. They say it is a free country but we don’t have the power to choose what medical treatment we want. In fact, this goes against everything capitalism stands for, the right of the consumer to make the choice for themselves and a free market.

Now let us take a quick peek at cannabis or marijuana. This particular issue I find completely ludicrous. The government doesn’t want people using marijuana or at least a faction of them don’t. It seems that neither do the chemical companies. Yet they are working on drugs derived from cannabis. There have been countless stories of how cannabis has helped people alleviate pain and deal with side effects from other medical treatments. Yet marijuana is getting resistance in being used for treatment while altered marijuana is getting a go.

I will go as far as to say that the pharmaceutical companies are criminally negligent if not outright evil in their handling of opium derivatives. For one thing, I am certain that the drug companies know that drugs are highly addictive. Yet instead of using these prescriptions as a last resort they are pushed. I recall going to the dentist needing a root canal. I was taking Tylenol and it was effectively dealing with the pain. My doctor prescribed a medicine and warned me not to drive while taking it. “It’s not derived from opium is it?” I asked half joking. It was. I said “No, thanks” refusing to take even the script from the man. These drugs should be used only as a last resort, surely not for a toothache.

Another thing that the pharmaceutical companies are criminally negligent in if not outright evil in is doing anything to stop the abuse of these drugs. There have been areas where the addictive drugs have been shipped and sold that are in no way could serve the population of that area. Rather the amount of drugs shipped was extremely too high to meet the needs under normal consumption. Instead of this raising the ‘red flag’ of warning the drug companies bow to the god of profits pretending not to see.

Of course, whenever the pharmaceutical companies are caught and successfully prosecuted they are simply fined and nobody goes to jail. So the lesson in America is, if you are rich you can break the law and get away with it.

I take this very seriously, I suffer from a chemical imbalance and I need a chemical to keep me sane. Is there a cure for what ails me or for the other horrid diseases and ailments that are out there? If there are I don’t trust the pharmaceutical companies in selling them as it would cut into their profits.
