“Sometimes you go to the mountain to get the blog, sometimes the blog brings you to the mountain” FeatherLeaf

So today has been a particularly hard day creatively. Some days the words just flow like a river when a dam bursts. At other times the river is but some brick mud. So it was today until this outburst of rain.

coffee photoWhen I was young I was terrified that I would never work in my life. Even once I was convinced that I needed my medicine I was still winding up in psychiatric hospitals. So I started writing song lyrics. This was thirty years ago when the music business was thriving and very much different. Song lyrics are perhaps the most difficult form of poetry to write. You have both strict meter and a rhyming scheme. There is the chorus with the hook. I know the professionals make it seem so easy. Put you give it a try and see how hard it is. You literally need to be a genius of the highest level to do it consistently.

Back in the day I wrote hundreds of song lyrics and got them copyrighted. The vast majority of them have never been seen by anybody outside myself. Recently I hooked up with an individual from Indonesia named Ashish Kejriwal. I have had the pleasure of his putting a melody and music to my lyrics. All in all I am very happy with the work that he has done. Not that this is particular lyric is my best but it fits what he likes.

So here I was today not planning to write a blog. It would have been the first day to miss having a blog published since I began my adventure. But fortunately today the blog came to me. So I happily present to you my song “Hot Black Coffee And A Cigarette”. It encapsulates my feelings of desperation, hanging on and hope.

Please leave a comment telling me what you think. And if you are a musician looking for lyrics give me a message.

Hot Black Coffee and a Cigarette

A thousand demos a day
All I can do is pray
When I rock and roll
It comes from the soul
I have sung them blues
Lived a life of bad news

Hot black coffee and a cigarette
How could life get better yet
Just enough to keep me going
Just enough to keep me growing
Hot black coffee and a cigarette

Looking for a soul to steal
The devil comes to make a deal
But I see through his disguise
Cause his words are only lies
The way Satan he function
He’ll take you to down to destruction

Hot black coffee and a cigarette
How could life get better yet
Just enough to keep me going
Just enough to keep me growing
Hot black coffee and a cigarette

Right now I’m below low
Up is the only way to go
Hitch hiking for a rocket
Only got three dollars in my pocket
But three will pay the toll
On the highway of Rock and Roll

Hot black coffee and a cigarette
How could life get better yet
Just enough to keep me going
Just enough to keep me growing
Hot black coffee and a cigarette

I see a light in the black night
I see a light burning green with delight
I hear a voice that always calls
I feel a hand that lifts as I fall
I may never make it to the top
But the truth is I’ll never stop

Hot black coffee and a cigarette
How could life get better yet
Just enough to keep me going
Just enough to keep me growing
Hot black coffee and a cigarette
