I use a variation of the inner dialog method. i first keep focused on my goal, then I try to catch the inner critic before I can act on its destructive advice and tell it that it’s keeping me from my goal. Recently it’s been making noise during my swim workouts. In the middle of a 1,000 yard workout, for example, it will say something like “it’s no big deal, you have other things to do today, so end the workout now.” In my head I’ll reply “thank you for your input, but you need to go away. I’m going to achieve my goal for this workout.”

Thank you for your valuable columns.

@ Andy313, you’re welcome! Thanks for sharing your experiences with your inner critic. I’ve found it really helpful to talk to my inner critic, too. And like you shared in your example, it helps to be clear, firm and kind — without trying to fight with your inner critic.
