Brilliantly stated. For 6 years I tried to hide my illness (BiPolar, severe depression) from my kids. I now sometimes worry that hiding the symptoms may have made their lives more difficult. As they are now 11 and 16, my incredible psychiatrist and therapist have invited my children to have a Q&A about my condition and prognosis. The immediate change in all of us is stunning! Thank you for sharing!!

Great blog, and great parenting advice! It IS different parenting with a mental illness (I have bipolar disorder) but it’s made me hyper-vigilant with my moods and my grown son. You brought up something interesting–your daughters have an awesome Mom, too. Yes! My son loves my quirkiness, sense of humor, and adores my creativity. Yep–it’s part of the whole package. And on the serious side, you give great advice. We both seek therapy when we can’t do it ourselves. Love reading your blogs!
