As a clinical psychologist and psych professor I agree entirely with Audrey’s perspective. Clinical research is very clear about the long-term consequences of insecure attachment sub-types which can result in a disorganized sub-type, as well as ambivalent or avoidant.

Given these earliest bonding dysfunctions, psychotherapy can often repair a considerable amount of the damage. In my courses of these topics, I show an ABC documentary of some years ago about Jonathan and Joseph Foster. In additions to high levels of verbal and physical abuse, threats of abandonment were very prominent. Therapy made a huge difference to these two boys.

Our clients have internalized a very defective early psychosocial environment. It never means that they are defective! It can be unlearned.

Thanks so much for this pertinent topic,
    Rich, MSW
