Yes, I have developed a problem with this. But only in a couple of areas. In the rest I am the complete opposite -my job is in social care and I compulsively look for the good and the hope regarding folks in the toughest of situations. I did for myself as well, as far as improving things and yet deep down and as time goes by, I realize I am cynical. I think it partly comes with exhaustion, as you say. I also think it grinds us home to the seat of our original low self-esteem. Childhood. Whatever happened and how we came to (un)value ourselves. It forces us into therapy really. Of some description. Or into loneliness etc etc

clear-dice – Good point about looking to the original source of our struggles with self-esteem. So important to take stock of what we’ve been taught (and have told ourselves) about our inherent worth and our abilities, and to work on modifying these beliefs, if need be.

Utterly true. The hardest and most necessary thing.
