Three of the books that I have authored are about crochet as therapy. Each book covers a completely different aspect of the process.
Each of the three books offers something different. By reviewing the three books, you can get a good feeling for how crochet heals people.
Crochet Saved My Life
This is the first book in the series. It shares my own story of reaching a state of suicidal depression. It also shares how I worked my way up from the pit of despair one loop at a time. Crochet was one major tool in my wellness toolbox.
The book also includes the stories of 23 other women who crocheted to heal from mental and physical illness. Furthermore, it incorporates research about the reasons why crochet helps to heal the brain and body.
Hook to Heal
I followed up this book with Hook to Heal. This second book is a set of 100 creativity exercises designed to help crocheters use the craft to improve all areas of their lives.
The cornerstone of the work is a crochet journal. Through the book, readers learn how to keep this journal.
Furthermore, each chapter has crochet exercises. They are designed to address grief, loss, relationships, inner demons and more. The exercises are in crochet. However, there is a section of each chapter called “yarn for thought” that is designed to enhance the journal component of the work.
This is not a crochet pattern book. In other words, if you want to learn how to crochet, then this isn’t the book for you. If you want to work from patterns and images, then this isn’t for you. In contrast, this is a work-through-it kind of lesson book for crafting in a way that helps you.
The format was inspired in part by The Artist’s Way series by Julia Cameron. This book series helped with my own mental health over the years.
Mandalas for Marinke
Finally, in 2015 I released Mandalas for Marinke. The book is named after a project that I started in response to the death by suicide of popular crochet designer Marinke Slump.
I had met Marinke online when interviewing her for Crochet Saved My Life. At that time, Marinke’s depression was in remission. Unfortunately, it came back and her life came to an end.
I created the project both to honor her legacy and to help the crochet community cope with the news. More than 300 people submitted crochet mandalas along with stories about depression, suicide, and crafting to heal. The book is a full-color curated collection of some of the mandalas and their stories.
The stories reveal some of the ways that people use crochet as therapy.

You might wonder what gave me the ability and interest to write about crochet as therapy. As you’ll learn from Crochet Saved My Life, my own experience with depression and anxiety sparked the initial interest. I used crochet as therapy personally.
Beyond that, I’ve done extensive research into the health benefits of crafting, particularly crochet. I have interviewed hundreds of people about their experiences healing through crafting. In 2014, I conducted a survey of 10,000+ people about how crochet helps them. In addition to my research, I have a Masters in Psychological Studies, an education through which I did further investigation into the topic.
