If one were simply trying to learn how to have more constructive conversations with a partner or become more assertive at work, a handful of sessions might be enough. But those of us who come from highly dysfunctional and abusive backgrounds and have difficult diagnoses are simply going to require more work. I’ve been in therapy regularly for almost twenty years, and because of it, I am undoubtedly the healthiest member of my family. I am so much healthier than I was when I started, but I still deal with BPD, DID, major depression, and C-PTSD. At this point I am very close to overcoming most of those diagnoses, and that could only happen (for me, anyway) with long-term therapy with highly skilled and ethical therapists. I would never trust any therapist who told me those issues require only short-term therapy.

Do what you need to do and never feel bad for taking care of yourself.

Dusty, I completely agree. I’m glad to hear you are close to overcoming those diagnoses. It really is a testament to your hard work and, as you say, the skill of your therapists, since it seems like you’ve had a lot to overcome. Thanks for your encouragement.
