3 Ways To Help Someone With Depression

Do you know a loved one with depression?  Are you looking to provide this person with love and support?  Continue reading this article to find out strategies to provide this person with love and support.

Be On Their Side

According to Psych Central’s article on how to support someone with depression, the first tip to help someone with depression is to be on their side.  Never say to a depressed person, “Why can’t you just get out of bed?”  Instead, say “You seem to be having trouble getting out of bed.  What can I do to help you?”  This way, they know you are on their side and are supporting them.

Give Plenty Of Reassurance

In addition to being on their side, according to the same article, give this person plenty of reassurance.  For instance, you can tell them ” I love you.  I love you for who you are.”  Let them know they are loved.  Reassure them they are loved.  They will appreciate this.  In addition, you can reaffirm their positive attributes.  For instance, according to psychcentral.com, you can say “You’re a sensitive person who cares for others” or, “People really love you a lot. They think you’re a great person.”

Give Understanding and Sympathy

In addition to being on their side and giving plenty of reassurance, it is also essential to give understanding and sympathy.  Try saying these helpful tips to them:

“I can’t imagine how hard it is for you, but you have all my sympathy.”

“All I want to do is give you a hug and a shoulder to cry on.”

“I can’t honestly say that I know how you feel, but I want to help in any way I can.”

Conclusion

To end this article, three helpful tips have been mentioned to help someone with depression.  The first tip includes being on their side.  You can say “You seem to be having trouble getting out of bed.  What can I do to help you?” The second tip includes giving the person plenty of reassurance.  You can say “”You seem to be having trouble getting out of bed.  What can I do to help you?”  In addition, the third tip includes giving understanding and sympathy.  You can say, ““I can’t imagine how hard it is for you, but you have all my sympathy,” “All I want to do is give you a hug and a shoulder to cry on,” in addition to “I can’t honestly say that I know how you feel, but I want to help in any way I can.”
