The biggest tip I think we learn from Catfish is you should use Skype. It’s a free service. You can get a web cam pretty cheaply (and keep it unplugged when you’re not using it,) and a headset with a microphone. If you’re getting pictures and having phone calls with someone, Skype is the best way to determine if they are who they say they are before actually meeting in person. Do the pictures and voice match up when you talk to them? Voices on Skype the the same as on the phone.

    Red Flags:
    1) Person will not skype with you

    2) Person always has an excuse why they can’t meet in person.

    3) Person asking you for money in any way / has some type of sad story and “if only they had money” (as in not asking outright but making you feel driven to send money.)

I met my husband online before skype existed. When we met for the first time we each brought a friend along, just in case. It all turned out to be legitimate, so it is possible to find love online without a scam.
