It’s a very sad day for Elton John, The singer took to social media to share that he was “in shock” following, what seems like, the sudden death of his mother, Sheila Farebrother. This, of course, is heartbreaking on its own but adding to the sadness is the fact that the pair had been out of touch for a decade and had only recently rekindled their relationship.

The 70-year-old singer told his fans Monday: “So sad to say that my mother passed away this morning. I only saw her last Monday and I am in shock. Travel safe Mum. Thank you for everything. I will miss you so much. Love, Elton.”

No explanation was provided about the circumstances surrounding his mother’s death but, if he’s 70 years old, she was likely in her 90s. It just goes to show that even when our loved ones are elderly, the news of their passing can still be unexpected and upsetting.

Falling Out

Back in 2015, Farebrother told the Daily Mail that the falling out with her famous son came after she refused to cut off contact with Bob Halley and John Reid, two of his oldest friends. “‘I told him: ‘I’m not about to do that and drop them,” she revealed. “Bob is like a son to me. He has always been marvellous to me and he lives nearby and keeps an eye on me.’”

The disagreement took place back in 2008 and Farebrother was really taken aback by how things went from there. She recounted, “…to my utter amazement, [John] told me he hated me. And he then banged the phone down. Imagine! To me, his mother!”

It feels like there must have been more to this than she said but you never know with families. Our relationships are so complicated and the things that cause the deepest divisions can seem so trivial from the outside. Only those directly involved can truly understand what’s happening.

Reconciliation

It was just last year when John told Daily Mirror that he and his mother had reconciled. “Out of respect for my mother’s privacy, I have always shied away from speaking publicly about our relationship,” he added. “However, I can say that we are now back in touch and have been so since my mother’s 90th birthday.”

He even shared a photo of them together on Mother’s Day this year along with the caption: “So happy we are back in touch.”

While it’s definitely sad that they lost so much time together, at least, they found their way back to each other before it was too late.
