One common trigger is seeing a former spouse dating again. The emotional response to this can be compounded further, of course, if the new partner is someone with whom they were unfaithful. For celebrities, it’s even more complicated since the drama unfolds in the public eye.
Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck are in the middle of a divorce after being separated for a couple years. Now, Affleck has been spotted with Saturday Night Live producer, Lindsay Shookus, and many accounts claim that the pair began their romance as an affair while Affleck was still married to Garner. People even claims that Garner once confronted Shookus, who was also married at the time, about the relationship in 2015.
With Shookus and Affleck being photographed out on dates and being affectionate, it could be easy for Garner to be vengeful. Some of us would relish in the opportunity to release a nasty statement disparaging the pair but that’s not what the 45-year-old actress has chosen to do.
Instead, she’s working on herself and focusing on their children, 11-year-old Violet, 8-year-old Seraphina and 5-year-old Sam. The family vacationed in the Bahamas together last month and seem to be trying to co-parent to the best of their abilities. Garner has been hitting the gym, taking the kids to church, and hasn’t been spotted without a smile on her face.
That’s not to say that people who are going through a divorce need to smile all the time. That wouldn’t be genuine for some but it seems to be working for Garner.
The best moment so far, though, has been her recent girls’ night with Chelsea Handler. After Affleck and Shookus were spotted having dinner at Il Ristorante di Giorgio Baldi in Santa Monica, California, Garner did the opposite of what you’d expect. Instead of avoiding the place like the plague, she actually ate there just days later.
You see, the restaurant was a place where Garner and Affleck dined regularly. He took Shookus there but that didn’t stop his ex-wife from continuing to enjoy it. It wasn’t tainted for her and that’s a powerful message for so many of us.
Life might not turn out the way we hoped or expected. People might hurt and disappoint us but we can’t let it break us or give up the things we love. We have to keep moving forward and living the life we deserve.
