Paris Jackson Warns of Triggering Effect of “13 Reasons Why”
A lot of people are checking out the Netflix series, 13 Reasons Why, but Paris Jackson, the daughter of the late Michael Jackson, is warning viewers to use caution before adding it to their must-watch list.
The 19-year-old told her Tumblr followers that the serious subject matter of suicide “was incredibly irresponsibly handled and puts people in very real danger.”
“This show was an amazing way to get the message across to bullies that they need to stop doing what they are doing,” Jackson explained. “It really did a good job of showing how impactful words and actions can be to other human beings. you can’t just do or say things to people without thinking about how it will affect them.”
As someone who has attempted suicide in the past, Jackson claims that the episodes can be “extremely triggering thing to watch” and that her aim was to protect those “who are struggling with depression or anxiety, self-harm, and or suicidal thoughts.”
In an additional Instagram post, Jackson continued: “[P]lease only watch this show with caution and keep in mind that it may put you in a dark place, if you are struggling please don’t watch it. if you think you can handle it, please by all means check it out.”
Clearly, she’s been through a lot and wants to look out for others who have suffered similarly. I will admit that I have been curious about the series but every time I decide to give it a chance, something stops me. It just seems really dark, even if it could be informative and enlightening.
As we head into the weekend, I’m sending positivity to everyone out there who might be feeling depressed, sad, and/or alone.
