He’s just 23 years old but Pete Davidson has been living under the influence for a long time. In fact, he has just announced that he’s sober for the first time in eight years! Fans had noticed his absence from Saturday Night Live but, really, the cast members rotate so much that it didn’t cause too much concern.

Newfound Sobriety

Rather than sweep things under the rug, the comedian addressed his disappearance head-on by posting this message on Instagram: “Just wanted to let you guys know I’m okay. I know I’ve kinda been missing, on social media and on the show. I quit drugs and am happy and sober for the first time in 8 years. It wasn’t easy, but I got a great girl, great friends and I consider myself a lucky man. I’ll always be here for you guys, I promise. Remember to never give up hope because sometimes that’s all we got. We are a family and I appreciate all your love and support. It’s nice to be back in action.”

It sounds like he’s optimistic about his recovery and focused on the future. Still, he’s also been honest about how the transition has been affecting his life.

“Unfunny and Boring”

During his return to Saturday Night Live, Davidson drew parallels between his sobriety and the life of House Speaker Paul Ryan. He said:

“All the Republicans wanted Paul Ryan to come up with something to replace Obamacare, and now that he did, everybody hates it. I know what this is like because for years people have been asking me to quit drugs and get sober. And now that I have, everyone thinks I’m unfunny and boring. At least I have dreams now.”

Father Died in 9/11

Some people may not know but the comedian’s father, Scott Davidson, died when he was just 7 years old. The fireman was among the casualties of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The night before the anniversary last year, Pete took to Instagram to share a photo of himself with his dad along with the caption: “Can’t believe tomorrow is going to be 15 years. Missing the legend !!! Thank u all for ur kind words and support as always #werememberthem.”

In 2015, he simply wrote: “All jokes aside. There’s not a day that goes by where I dont think of u. Ur my hero. Cant wait to see u again someday.”

For the past eight years, Pete has been drinking as well as using marijuana and mushrooms. Some might say that it’s understandable that he might struggle to cope with such an enormous loss, in such a public way, at such a young age. It’s a lot.

Bright Future

The funnyman is currently dating Cazzie David, the daughter of legendary writer/actor/producer, Larry David. The pair have been open about their relationship, sharing several sweet photos together.

It’s hard work to get sober. It’s even harder work to stay sober. All the best to Pete Davidson and the wonderful people who support him on this journey.
