When Prince died last year, it was almost like the Earth stood still and even Mariah Carey had to take a few moments while on stage performing to acknowledge the shocking and sudden loss of someone who had touched so many. In fact, she even shared the reason why it was so difficult for her on a personal level.
Her reality show, Mariah’s World, has been airing for a few weeks and, on a recent episode, she shared footage from a concert in Paris. After taking the stage, she addressed the audience and said that she wasn’t sure if she could “make it through” the show because she was so upset to learn that Prince had died.
As the audience digested the news, she explained: “I’m not sure if everybody has heard the news yet that we lost one of the greatest, most incredible geniuses that we’ve ever had in music. He was just one of a kind and just so amazing and I didn’t know if I was gonna be able to come out here and put on a show and be festive.”
In the end, however, she decided that the show must go on because “that’s what Prince would want [her] to do.” She added: “I think he would want me to get through it.”
A Friend In Need
Years ago, following her divorce from Tommy Mottola, Carey began suffering from some undisclosed mental health issues. She even checked into a hospital citing “extreme exhaustion” back in 2001.
Fortunately, she had some supportive people around her, helping her get back on her feet and, apparently, Prince was among them. As she said to the crowd in Paris following his death: “He was a friend to me too and he talked me through some times when I really, really needed somebody.”
Carey then led the audience in taking a moment of silence for her “incredible” friend.
It just one more example of the fact that, you can be rich and famous and still need to have a strong support system. I’m glad Prince was there for her during a time of need.
