Despite the fact that they are trying to raise two small children, the media seems determined to rip them to shreds and there are no shortage of people commenting on the stories. Have we forgotten what it’s like to go through hard times in our own lives? Do “famous” people really not deserve any sort of decency?
When Kim gave birth to their daughter, North, in 2013 she was suffering from preeclampsia, a condition that causes dangerously high blood pressure in expectant mothers, among other serious complications. She also had placenta accreta which, essentially, means that the placenta did not detach from the uterus as expected during the birthing process and had to be removed manually.
Although, this put future pregnancies at risk, Kim and Kanye chose to expand their family and, again, with her second pregnancy, she experienced serious complications when son, Saint, was born 13 months ago.
These issues, and the addition of two children, alone would be enough to create stress and turmoil in a household. Anyone who has raised children can probably relate, at least, in some way.
Back in October 2016 during Paris Fashion Week, Kim was staying at the No Address Hotel when armed men broke in and robbed her at gunpoint. Millions of dollars worth of jewelry was taken. Kanye was on-stage performing at the time when he abruptly left, citing a family emergency.
Again, whatever emotional trauma Kim suffered must have only added to her stress as a new mother and wife. Most people will never know what that kind of experience feels like and, regardless of her fame, we should be empathetic to how scary that must have been.
Kanye’s Breaking Point
Long before Kim, Kanye’s heart belonged fully to another woman – his mother, Donda West. She had done her best to raise him, largely as a single mother, and was his biggest source of support and inspiration. Due to complications from plastic surgery, she died suddenly in 2007.
Many will agree that her son has not been the same since. In fact, the rapper opened up to the audience at the screening for his movie, Runway, back in 2010 and admitted that he had once been suicidal. No one has to like him but he is a human being and seems to have been in deep pain for years.
This past November, during a performance on his Saint Pablo tour, Kanye started addressing his friend and fellow rapper, Jay-Z, publicly on stage. Some of the things he said led authorities to encourage him to seek medical attention.
In the hospital, medical teams treated him for sleep deprivation, dehydration, and symptoms that would suggest an impaired mental state. No official diagnosis has been released but he did cancel the remaining 21 dates in his tour. Sources have claimed that he is simply exhausted and, really, a lack of sleep can cause a host of problems.
It’s really none of our business. What we do know, however, is that, while Kanye and Kim may not be known for rescuing kittens from trees and spending their weekends volunteering at orphans, the same can be said of most of us. Yet, we deserve empathy, privacy, and encouragement, don’t we?
Then so do they.
