EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ-NOV 13: Donald Trump and wife Melania TrumpLet’s make this clear from the beginning – this is not a post about politics. Sure, it’s indirectly implicated but I am not making a statement about how anyone should cast their vote in November. I am, however, wondering, in the middle of all this chaos, what happens to the wife of a certain political candidate. More specifically – what about Melania Trump?

Donald Trump running for president was a real surprise and, really, most people didn’t seem to think he’d make it this far but, here we are, just weeks away from the election and he’s the Republican nominee. While his numbers have been steady (or rising!) for months, his newest scandal threatens to derail his campaign entirely.

A video of an old conversation he had with Billy Bush has surfaced and he made some incredibly lewd comments about women. In the clip, he discusses trying to bed a married woman, among other crude things. At the time, he had only been married to Melania for a few months and she was pregnant with their now 11-year-old son, Barron.

Of course, this is not the first time Trump has been accused of misogyny, sexual abuse, or just generally disrespecting women. Every time, however, he’s managed to explain his actions and retain the support of his voters. This time, even his own vice presidential running mate, Mike Pence, has condemned his behavior.

Melania Trump has been largely quiet this whole time. Sure, she’s appeared at events but she hasn’t said much and has really taken a back seat to Trump’s daughter, Ivanka (who, as of the time of this writing, has not commented on the video). Now, she’s had to release a statement and, really, it must be a tough moment for her.

She said: “The words my husband used are unacceptable and offensive to me. This does not represent the man that I know. He has the heart and mind of a leader. I hope people will accept his apology, as I have, and focus on the important issues facing our nation and the world.”

As a wife, behind closed doors, hearing him talk that way while he was married to her (and she was carrying his child) had to hurt. Naturally, she is expected to remain supportive of her husband at a moment like this but is that really fair? She is an adult and has a choice of whether to stay in her marriage but, in such a high stakes situation, this has to be confusing and difficult. Even if she wanted to leave or if she was upset by how hard this election has become, what could she do?

Trump has brought up the affairs of Bill Clinton and has (along with many) criticized his wife, presidential hopeful, Hillary Clinton, for standing by his side through it all. Is this situation any different? Couldn’t someone argue that Bill and Donald both put their wives in similar predicaments? It’s definitely food for thought.

If you were Melania Trump, what would you do right now?
