Last month, Bachelor Nation fans were shocked and saddened by another loss. Former contestant, Alexa (Lex) McAllister, was found dead from an apparent suicide. Her family was left reeling after the loss but they found the strength to open up about the tragedy.
Josh McAllister, Lex’s brother, told Entertainment Tonight: “Our family has been blessed with so much support. So many people have reached out to tell us what Lex meant to them. We believe Lexi was an amazingly bright star and her shine could only light the world for so long. The number of people she touched at 31 is more than some people touch in a lifetime.”
It’s definitely helpful to find something positive in an otherwise devastating situation. It’s great that the family is getting some much-needed support during this understandably difficult time.
“Her death brings up questions that we as a family are still working to find answers to,” Josh continued. “I hope others learn from the tragic way she came to pass. We as a family had no idea Lexi was at a point in her life that this would happen. The hope is to one day have a foundation in her name so everyone can remember her as a great story, and not just a tragic ending. Anybody can be suffering, mental illness is often looked at as taboo and people don’t speak out.”
These sentiments were echoed by sister, Andrea Bogner. “She was not a drug addict in any way shape or form and drugs have never been a problem for her. She did not take drugs recreationally. Although, she did have struggles, we were not afraid that she was suicidal,” Bogner explained. “We were not even aware of that. It was complete shock that she committed suicide.” She added that Lex had been divorced for five years at the time of her death.
Bogner also explained that, while they are shocked and have lingering questions, they are “not ashamed of how she died and not afraid to say that she committed suicide.” This is a powerful statement for all of the families who have been touched by similar tragedies. The McAllisters are undergoing grief counseling to help them come to terms with their loss and shared their story in hopes of helping others.
Circumstances Surrounding Death
Lex was house-sitting for her parents who had gone out of town when her fatal overdose occurred. She was discovered by her sister, Andrea Bogner, and their cousin. The pair did not find a note but called 911 as soon as soon as they found Lex. She was taken to the hospital in stable condition but died three days later.
Same “Bachelor” Season as Gia
Gia Allemand was an actress and model who was known for posing in Maxim. She, along with Lex, competed on Season 14 of The Bachelor where the women were vying for the attention of Jake Pavelka. The second to last contestant to be eliminated, Allemand (and viewers) was shocked when she was sent home but she later appeared on Bachelor Pad. She went on to have a long-term relationship with NBA star, Ryan Anderson, and all seemed to be going well in her life. It was devastating when she hung herself in her apartment while on the phone with her mother in 2013.
Not long after it happened, Pavelka appeared on a special episode of Dr. Phil to discuss Gia and her suicide. Upon hearing the news of McAllister’s death, he took to Twitter to express his condolences. “Im so sad to hear about Alexa,” he tweeted. “Such a beautiful girl. My heart breaks for her family. Covering them in prayer during this rough time.”
Hopefully, the McAllister family, and so many who have found themselves in a similar situations, can find peace in the face of such a tremendous loss.
