Khloe Kardashian Opens Up About Lamar Odom’s Recovery
Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom were tabloid fodder for a while before she took steps to end their marriage. It seemed like a good step for her since his lifestyle appeared to be a major factor in their marital problems. It wasn’t a huge surprise to fans, therefore, that, while they were separated Odom started engaging in behavior that almost cost him his life.
Last October, the 36-year-old former Los Angeles Laker was rushed to the hospital after he was found unconscious at a Nevada brothel. He had taken cocaine and other substances, including an herbal form of Viagra. After a lengthy hospitalization, Odom continues to fight to regain some semblance of normality.
During an interview with Good Morning America, Kardashian explained: “He’s doing great but, you know, it’s a long journey and it’s something that he’s working really hard on. Every day is different. We take every day as it comes. I’ve learned not to really look into the future too much.” His 31-year-old estranged wife has put off plans to finalize their divorce and has remained by his side throughout the entire ordeal.
What does that mean for their relationship? Kardashian added: “I do believe that we’re soulmates but…that’s not even where my head is at. I think people, they don’t understand the severity of everything. It was really scary. I know when we got to the hospital in Vegas, we were told, you know, there’s only a few hours to live and we had to make some medical decisions… There were a lot of challenges but he’s a fighter and, obviously, he’s here now and he’s out of the hospital. It’s all about his health and my happiness and his happiness and right now those are two individual things.”
Unfortunately, his road to recovery has not been without hurdles. When Odom was moved from Las Vegas to Los Angeles, they noticed a regression in his progress. Kardashian told Howard Stern on his SiriusXM show: “When he first woke up out of his coma, he was way more aware. He then regressed. Once he transferred to LA, he regressed greatly where he stopped talking completely and everything. Very scary. But when he first woke up, he was like, ‘Hi!’ almost like he woke up from a nap. It was so bizarre at first.”
Part of her strategy, she explained, to keep him on the right track is to protect him from what’s being said about him by the media. She recounted a story about finding him Googling himself on his iPad and she immediately made the decision to take it away. “I have to remember he has no idea what people know,” Kardashian told Stern. “He doesn’t know if we only found him and this is private.”
For the sake of all involved, let’s hope that Odom continues to improve and that this health crisis has made a lasting impact on how he intends to live the rest of his life. It’s a sad lesson to learn but he’s alive and has a second chance to do things differently.
