We’ve all had moments when we probably realized that we waste way too much time checking out social media and not enough time looking into the eyes of the people around us. Few of us actually do something about it but musical superstar, Ed Sheeran, has decided that he needs to make a change.
It’s the time of year when many of us are making resolutions for how to live better and, for 2016, Sheeran has decided to take some time away from staring at a screen while he focuses on creating his third album. It must be pretty difficult to work on something as personal as songwriting when there are so many things competing for his attention.
He posted a truly intriguing message for his fans that read as follows:
“Hello all. I’m taking a break from my phone, emails, and all social media for a while.
I’ve had such an amazing ride over the last five years but I find myself seeing the world through a screen and not my eyes so I’m taking this opportunity of me now having to be anywhere or do anything to travel the world and see everything I missed.
To my friends and family, if you love me you will understand me buggering off for a bit, to my fans, the third album is on its way and the best thing I have ever made thus far.
See you all next Autumn and thank you for being amazing. Ed x.”
Anyone who has taken a break from smartphones, social media and similar things will know how therapeutic it can be. He may discover that he has so much more time on his hands without all of the distractions and trappings of modern technology.
It’s amazing that he’s even including his friends and family (to be honest, it’s often those closest to us who can be the biggest drain on our energy!). Sometimes, it’s great to just be alone and explore ourselves, isn’t it? We often overlook giving ourselves that kind of time and space to grow and process our daily experience.
I hope that Ed finds what he’s looking for and that he’s able to share it through his upcoming music. Maybe he will inspire his legions of fans to cut the cord and take a break from social media too. I know it’s making me consider it as part of my plan for greater peace and connectedness in the new year!
