Cathriona White’s family were left stunned by her sudden death earlier this week. The on-again-off-again girlfriend of actor, Jim Carrey, was just 30 years old when she was found. It appears as though she committed suicide.
The Irish-born makeup artist was “pronounced dead at 8:40pm [Monday] night at a residence” according to Los Angeles Assistant Chief Coroner, Ed Winter. Although, there were indications of suicide, an official cause of death cannot be determined until an autopsy has been completed. As Winter added: “It was reported as a possible suicide. There evidently was a note found. There were pills located near her… final cause of death won’t be released until we get full toxicology and tests back.”
In a statement to the Irish Independent, White’s family stated: “The family of Cathriona White sincerely regret the untimely passing of their beloved daughter and sister. Cathriona was a shining light in our lives who was loved deeply by her entire family. We will miss her terribly and at this difficult time we ask to be left in private to mourn our loss. There will be no further statements on behalf of the family.”
Carrey also released a statement saying that he was “deeply saddened by the passing of [his] sweet Cathriona,” to whom he had been romantically linked for the past three years. He added:
“She was a truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil, to whom loving and being loved was all that sparkled. My heart goes out to her family and friends and to everyone who loved and cared about her.” Reports show that the pair first met while on set back in 2012.
As with any sudden, untimely death, questions still remain about what really happened. Some have suggested that her involvement with the Church of Scientology led to her demise but, at the time of this writing, there is nothing to support that theory.
It originated with an article written by journalist, Tony Ortega, who claimed she was a member prior to her death. He alleges that she was telling friends that she was completing the “Survival Rundown” which is a required objective for any members as they progress to the Bridge to Total Freedom.
A spokesperson for the Church told E! News the following: “Saying that somebody was studying Scientology in the past and connecting that to a suicide is like saying a person who had previously studied the Bible committed suicide. It is sad and reprehensible that a paid anti-Scientologist like Tony Ortega is exploiting this terrible tragedy involving a young woman: it’s a sign of outright bigotry.”
Whatever the circumstances, this is still a tragic loss. Hopefully, her death can help raise awareness about suicide and start a dialogue that can save lives.
