Jennifer Garner, Ben Affleck at the 85th Annual Academy Awards AHollywood has been rocked by the allegations that Ben Affleck cheated on his wife, Jennifer Garner, with their nanny. After a decade of marriage, and three children, it seemed like their relationship was reasonably solid. Fans were disappointed, however, when the pair announced their impending divorce. Garner is a beautiful, successful woman and Affleck could have had an affair with almost any woman in the world. Why would he cheat? More specifically, why would he chose to do it with an employee?

Not the First

Jude Law and Ethan Hawke have been linked to nannies and Robin Williams even married (and fathered two children with) his son’s babysitter, Marsha Garces. Their marriage lasted nearly two decades.

Now, Ben Affleck is rumored to have been spending quality time with his children’s caregiver, 28-year-old Christine Ouzounian. While he has denied these allegations, Garner continues to move forward with their sudden divorce.

Why Does This Happen?

Of course, every individual case is different but one psychologist has offered an explanation. Dr. Seth Meyers, the author of Overcome Relationship Repetition Syndrome recently said: “Men often cheat with the nanny due to proximity and convenience. She is already in the home and he can see her frequently… Sometimes famous men cheat to regain a sense of power in the relationship. The danger or risks involved for some individuals make the behavior more thrilling.”

Fellow psychologist, Dr. Chloe Carmichael, adds: “Men are biologically driven to seek young, fertile, dependable women. As a younger and less financially secure employee, she, the nanny, is oftentimes an admirer of the employer-husband’s prowess as a provider, so this sets the stage for taboo attraction… Seriously, do not get an attractive nanny. Recognize that placing him in the home 24/7 with an attractive young available woman is like putting yourself in a cake shop during a diet: just not smart.”

Is it fair, though, to seemingly give men a “free pass.” By making it seem that they are incapable of avoiding an affair with caregivers, it makes fathers seem powerless and weak.

While not exactly an “expert,” Valerie Greenberg, the Executive Editor of Naughty Gossip, weighed in and said: “There is no excuse for cheating on your spouse. It doesn’t matter if the nanny tries to seduce you, or if she’s exceptionally beautiful. Often times that isn’t even the case and it happens out of insecurity and boredom. Bottom line is don’t get married if you’re interested in someone else’s bottom, and honor your vows.”

Ultimately, communication is very important to preventing these situations from occurring in the first place. Keeping an open dialogue about what is happening in a marriage helps to safeguard it from secrets and deception. Still, no one is perfect and sometimes mistakes happen. It is up to each couple to decide whether they can work through their issues or if it is best to move on. Hopefully, Affleck and Garner will make a choice that is best for their family.
