Most recently seen in Sharknado 3, Kim Richards is best known as one of the stars of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills but she’s also made headlines for speaking out on her issues with alcohol abuse and walking out on Dr. Phil halfway through an interview. In a sitdown with Entertainment Tonight, she discussed her struggles as well as her arrest at the Beverly Hills Hotel and her appearance on the talk show.
Sobriety and Relapse
The 50-year-old reality TV star told ET: “I love sobriety. I’ve always loved sobriety, and relapsing was very hard for me. It was not easy. I have to say, don’t take this wrong, but I really wanted to go to treatment because I needed a break from what I was going through at home.”
Richards recounted some of the family stress that she believes played a role in her relapse. Her sister, Kyle Richards, had stopped speaking to her, she had to give her dog away and her ex-husband and son were sick. The combination of things simply overwhelmed her.
Return to Rehab
Last month, Richards completed a rehab program for the second time this year. In her Entertainment Tonight interview, she stated that she is 30 days sober and explained: “I went in and I got to learn a whole lot about myself. I dug deep into my past, things that happened to me as a child, good and bad, teenage years, relationships with all my loved ones, where they need to be mended, where they’re very powerful. I worked on me.”
In the past year, Richards has been to rehab four times but seemed more focused with her recent stint. In May, she checked out of a facility to attend the wedding of her daughter, Brooke Brinson. This time, she “decided to stay in treatment” instead of going to niece, Nicky Hilton’s, nuptials.
On April 16, 2015, Richards was arrested at the Beverly Hills Hotel after refusing to leave the hotel’s restaurant. Things escalated further when she locked herself into the bathroom. When she finally surrendered to the police, she was charged with public intoxication, trespassing, resisting arrest and battery of a police officer.
Rather than make excuses for herself, Richards says she learned from the experience. She told ET: “My arrest was my ‘A-ha, I get to go away now and rest and take a break from all this.’ I don’t want anybody to take this wrong, but I truly needed a break from hospitals, family, the pressure. I needed to go away.”
So far, there has been no announcements from Bravo about Richards returning to Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and she claims to have not yet spoken to producers. Instead, she stresses that her goal is to get healthy and continue focusing on treatment. It sounds like she has her priorities in place.
