Jared Padalecki’s Open Battle with Depression

LOS ANGELES - JAN 16: Jared Padalecki arrives to the Critics' CSupernatural is a show with one of the biggest cult followings in history with fans that are notoriously supportive and protective of its stars, including Jared Padalecki. In recent months, the actor has opened up about his struggle with depression and, in the past week, fans saw first hand how much he continues to be affected.

Cancelled Appearances

The former Gilmore Girls heartthrob abruptly canceled some planned appearances and took to Twitter last Friday to make the announcement. He first wrote: “Dear #JIBCON and #AHBL6. I am in desperate and urgent need of my family. I am so sorry to tell you this but I must head home.”

He followed up by saying, to fans: “I need all of the love I can get right now. Please please give me a few seconds of your time and write me. #AlwaysKeepFighting.”

Revealing Interview

In a recent interview with Variety, Padalecki revealed that, despite his success, he has suffered privately. He said: “I, in the past, have had my own struggles of not [being] so happy with where I am in life, which is strange and I think it goes to show… Maybe a lot of people don’t know this, but season three [of Supernatural], we were shooting an episode, and I went back to my trailer to get changed and just kind of broke down. A doctor came to set and talked to me for about 30 minutes or 45 minutes and said, ‘Jared, I think you’re clinically depressed. I think I should write you a note and we can shut down production for five days and then we can take it from there.'”

Positive Attitude

Not only has Padalecki devoted time to charities benefiting those who battle depression but he’s also become an example of why it’s important to keep this topic alive and out of the shadows. He explained that he constantly reiterates that “there’s no shame in dealing with these things,” or “in having to fight every day, but fighting every day, and presumably, if you’re still alive to hear these words or read this interview, then you are winning your war. You’re here.”

It’s so important for others to hear those encouraging words and to be reminded that every moment should be seen as a victory.

Gratitude for Support

Rather than face backlash from disappointed fans following his cancelled appearances, Padalecki has been largely greeted with support. Using Twitter, he showed his appreciation by saying: “Thank you, from the bottom of my heart and soul, for your love and support. It’s going to good use. All of my love and #AlwaysKeepFighting.”

It is never easy to be vulnerable and admit how much we may be struggling and that must be only amplified for those who live in the public eye. Hopefully, his bravery and continued battle will inspire others to keep up the fight and reach out for help and support when they need it.
