My family is currently going through a health crisis, and in light of that I’ve decided to place Celebrity Psychings on hiatus.
Combining the two topics–celebrities and mental health–isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, so it’s always been my goal to do so in the most respectful and educational way possible.
I can’t guarantee either of those while my attention now is primarily focused on my family.
Keeping with the spirit of the blog, I’ve decided to leave you with five mental health lessons we can learn from celebrities.

5 Mental Health Lessons We Can Learn From Celebrities
1. It’s so, so important to seek help.
Britney Spears, Amanda Bynes, Charlie Sheen–think about some of the celebrities who didn’t seek help before their symptoms started taking over.
2. You CAN talk about it.
You don’t HAVE to talk about it; absolutely, it is your right to keep your health information private.
However, having a support system is so beneficial to recovery and maintenance, and to get that system, someone (or some people) have to know what’s going on.
When Demi Lovato opened up about her mental health issues, she of course help spread mental health awareness, but she also specifically spoke about having a support system around her.
3. People care.
Unfortunately, mental health stigma still spreads far and wide, not just in America but throughout the world. Some people think those with depression, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia are “weak,” “crazy,” or “dangerous.”
Yet, there are people who care. Maybe you have a caring family, or maybe you have a close friend or three. You might even have a support group who’s been there and done that.
Whatever the case, understand that there are people who understand mental illness and care about your recovery.
4. Your life isn’t over–by far.
So many–too many–people see a mental illness diagnosis as the end of their lives.
Well, it’s not.
You’ll have to make a few changes–you’ll have to learn to manage therapy, medication, symptoms–but it’s not the end of your life.
Look at Catherine Zeta-Jones. She’s entered treatment centers twice in the last several years to manage her bipolar disorder and still lives a vibrant, successful life. Sure, she’s a ridiculously wealthy actress, but guess what? There are more of us than there are of her, and we’re making our lives our lives just fine.
You can still fall in love and have a family, build a career, travel–you just have to take care of your health along the way!
5. Your story can help others.
Think of how many celebrity mental health stories that’ve inspired us or taught us a lesson or two? Glenn Close and sister Jessie starting Bring Change 2 Mind, for example, and Joey Pantoliano‘s frank discussions about his own mental “DISease” and work with American soldiers–these folks’ honesty and advocacy have helped others understand every other lesson in this list.
