Monday was my birthday, and instead of reflecting on everything I’ve learned over the years (like I did when I turned 30), I spent it treating myself like a rockstar.
I took the day off and did solely what I wanted to do (as long as it was good for me, of course!). I ate great food, did some shopping, and basked in the glow of people who love me.
I highly recommend it, for both your mental health and physical health.
Why not treat yourself like a rockstar in honor of this World Mental Health Day?
1. Take the Day Off
On Monday, I did nothing related to work. I took the day off.
I understand that, as a freelance writer, I have that luxury; not everyone works a job (or has a boss) that will allow them to disappear for a day.
If you can, take this World Mental Health Day off; if you can’t, schedule a few hours at the end of your day that are solely for you.
2. Book a Trip
It doesn’t have to be a week-long cruise or a trip to the Keys; it can be as simple as checking out a band you’ve been wanting to see or making a quick road trip to a town you just love visiting.
Whatever it is, book the trip!
As for me, I’m seeing Ryan Bingham this weekend!
3. Pamper Yourself
You can do this on your own or at a local day spa. Consider:
- Ordering a massage.
- Having a facial.
- Getting a manicure or pedicure.
- Changing your hair, or just getting a professional shampoo and deep conditioning.
- Getting a makeover (cosmetics counters at lots of higher-end department stores do them for free).
When you feel better physically (and sometimes when you feel better about your physical appearance), often it helps you feel better mentally, too.
4. Eat Well
Focus on healthy foods today like bright fruits and veggies, leafy greens, and beans which provide antioxidants, can boost serotonin, and promote energy.
5. Exercise Your Body
You can’t be a rockstar if you don’t take care of your body!
(Not for long, anyway!)
6. Exercise Your Mind
Carve out some time to day to give your mind a workout, too. Read a book, watch a documentary, or have a (friendly!) debate with someone.
7. Splurge (a little!)
Maybe there’s a designer pair of jeans you’ve been pining for, or a new video game you’ve heard great things about. Maybe it’s a fancy new smartphone or some pumps you know you’ll have to plan a trip just to have somewhere to wear them.
If you can financially swing it, go ahead and splurge! Treating yourself every now and then is good for your spirit!
8. Spread the Wealth.
Lots of “real” rockstars (or celebrities!) share the wealth. Sometimes it’s actual money; other times it’s goods or services.
I chose to donate to the Harmony Fund, and knowing my donation would help save animals across the planet felt great.
Choose a charity (or charitable act) that’s close to your heart and donate resources or volunteer some time.
9. Surround Yourself with Fans!
Make sure you connect with your loved ones. Call those you don’t live near; have dinner with those you do.
4. Finally, Relax
Meditation, a good book, a hot bubble bath – whatever you choose, take some time to relax and unwind from it all.
