Weekend Reading: Catherine Zeta-Jones Won’t Suffer Silently

Just a couple of weeks after news broke about her Bipolar II Disorder treatment, 41-year-old actress Catherine Zeta-Jones has given an exclusive statement to People magazine.

Earlier this month, a representative for Catherine Zeta-Jones confirmed the actress sought in-patient treatment for Bipolar II Disorder at Silver Hill Hospital near New Canaan, Connecticut. Speculation hinted at a rough year (husband Michael Douglas recently recovered from throat cancer) and the need to treat depression before she begins filming her new movie, Playing the Field.

Rather than just clear the air, Catherine hopes her straightforwardness about the mental illness will help others:

This is a disorder that affects millions of people and I am one of them. If my revelation of having bipolar II has encouraged one person to seek help, then it is worth it. There is no need to suffer silently and there is no shame in seeking help. (People)

How refreshing – not to mention inspiring and hopeful – is it when someone speaks so candidly about
