Does Crystal Bowersox's New Smile Mean New Confidence?

For someone who’d – self-reportedly – never even wore makeup before the show, American Idol runner up Crystal Bowersox seems to be getting cozy with the idea of getting all prettied up.

More than the idea of it, Momma Sox recently had a bit of cosmetic dentistry done to fix the gap I (and I’m sure a lot of other fans, despite some of the criticism she also received) thought was, well, just part of her unique character.

Lyndsey Parker of Yahoo’s Reality Rocks blog shares before and after pictures of Crystal’s smile (as well as a scanned copy of one celebrity dentist’s shameless cry for business) and, after pointing out similar makeovers of former Idols and contestants (think Carrie Underwood, Ruben Studdard, Jennifer Hudson, and Kellie Pickler), poses the question: “So, does this dental makeover signify the introduction of a sparklier, more polished Crystal?”

[…] considering that Crystal’s trademark dreadlocks and chin piercing seem quite intact in her toothy Twitpic, let’s just assume that the “Holy Toledo” singer won’t forget where she came from now that she’s gone Hollywood, and that fans of Crystal’s granola-girl charm will still have lots to smile about when her album comes out this fall.

After reading the article, my first reaction was sadness. Just a smidge. I was afraid this was the first sign of Crystal letting Hollywood sink its teeth into her (rather than vice versa, as Parker stated). I was afraid the glitz and glamor of fame was making her feel inadequate, or, she was feeling the only way to compete would be to make herself over.

However, the more I thought about it, the more I realized that’s not what this has to mean at all. Despite seeming to be always comfortable in her own skin, maybe she wasn’t all that comfortable? Maybe the gap in her teeth made her feel self-conscious? Maybe no longer having to worry about whether someone’s looking at what she considered an imperfection has relaxed her?

I mean, we’re talking about a tooth here. Not a set of triple Ds. It’s not really a big deal. I had braces once. The world kept spinning.

In any event, I don’t know the reason behind it, but you have to admit one thing’s for certain: Crystal Bowersox’s new smile is ah-maz-ing! 🙂
