Mandala: Your Own Healing Light
You can use Mandala work as a self help therapeutic tool whenever you feel anxious or out of balance. We talked about mandalas in my last post. The uses for mandala meditation are vast.Engagement with Mandala is a time for you to tap into your own creativity and your own energy, using your own inner light and inner resources. It is creation in action with you as the instrument of said creation. For example;
1. As a meditation
a. To regain balance
b. To reduce anxiety
c. To allow unconscious emotions to emerge, become conscious, and resolve
d. To help you solve a problem
e. To help you resolve a conflict
f. To increase your intuition
g. To answer a questions from using your inner guidance
2. Create a Personal Mandala that reflects or expresses purpose
3. Create a Personal Mandala that reflects and expresses your true self, or authentic soul identity’
The “How To” of creating mandala is also very vast. There are not hard and fast rules. Many people begin with a special meditation or prayer that they like to use; and imagine their work area as a “sacred space”. Perhaps you will want to spend 2 minutes or 30 minutes in prayer or mediation, or you might say your affirmations. Whatever you use to reset yourself, and shift your focus onto the task is find. Perhaps setting up the work space by gathering your pens or crayons, and paper etc.. and clearing an area to work can be competed in a reverent manner. Once you have yourself psychically prepared; begin with the purpose of your mandala and be clear about your intention.
Drawing the Mandala: There are different instructions depending on the school. Most begin with taking a square piece of paper and drawing a perfect circle on it. The next step is to identify the exact center of the circle. This is the point of your “meditation”. Some schools will have the practitioner divide the mandalla into four quadrants. Others will have you begin to draw symbols of your expression beginning with the inner most circle from the absolute center; in circular fashion until the entire circle is filled. (There are many different techniques for form) From this source (the absolute center of the circle), comes everything that will emerge into the larger circle. Depending on your intention, you will create symbols to express that which is within the pure center of the circle. For example, if you are attempting to regain emotional balance; then that is your intention. You mentally put this intention into the center of the circle. You will imagine what emotional balance feels like, looks like, and expresses. You will create symbols to represent emotional balance. You will then place these symbols in the form that makes sense to you as you fill up the space within the circle.
You may not want to create your own mandala, but are interested in using mandala coloring as a tool to help you reduce your anxiety. If this is the case, you can find an endless supply of mandalas for use online. There are many sites where you can download them for free. There are also some very good books with mandalas to color online that do not cost very much at all. Additionally, there are many, many websites that explain the art of mandala from many perspectives and that provide suggestions about how to proceed with the activity. I found a few to get you started, but once you actually look online for yourself, you will see that you could spend hours just learning about this fascinating subject while acquiring ideas for many different ways to create your own mandala.
