All valid points except number one. It is not OK to be selfish. It is OK to put your health and healing first. Putting your emotional health needs first is not the same as being selfish. One of the major problems with most mental illness is you tend to look inward and not think of other people. Learning to be unselfish while putting your on mental health needs at the top of the list is a powerful tool in mental health recovery.

    Hi Ann,

Thanks for sharing your story and some of the things that have been helpful for you in dealing with such a debilitating illness. One of my sisters is diagnosed with Bipolar Mood Disorder. I will ask if she minds that I share it with her. I think your article will be helpful to her.

I’m a licensed clinical therapist and I work with individuals with SPMI disorders, including Bipolar Mood Disorder. I’ve never volunteered any of my experience to my family. I learned early in my career to not take on therapeutic responsibilities of loved ones and friends. It just crosses over too much.

    Kind Regards,

    Ben
